Upcoming workshops

Just for Teens!

Sundays, March 15, 22, 29

2-3:15 p.m.

at Timbre Folk and Baroque

Bancroft Way and 5th Street in Berkeley

Just for Teens is a three-week voice workshop for middle and high school-aged singers who want to sound and feel the best they can.

Does your voice feel “fried” more often than you’d like?

Do people complain that they can’t hear you?

Are the low/high notes too hard to reach?

THIS IS ALL FIXABLE.

Come learn how to make the most of your instrument, even as it’s changing (nearly every day).

We’re going to cover the basics of healthy vocal technique, but how we do that will be tailored to your individual interests and concerns.

Enrollment is limited to 6.

My after school and weekend times are currently full, so this workshop is the only way to get my ears on your issues right now. And you’ll probably make some new friends 🙂

Beginners are absolutely welcome, and there will be plenty for you if you’ve been singing for years.

Come as you are, and let others do the same.

The Self-Sustaining Singer

12 Thursdays - July 16 to October 1, 2026

10 - 11 a.m.

on Zoom

The Self-Sustaining Singer:

     a 12-week online group experience

Learn how to warm up your unique body
so you can do your very best singing,
wherever that may be.

If your voice feels strained more often than you’d like
or sounds pitchy, or tinny or thin,
warming up well, and consistently, will help you fix that.
And 12 weeks of working with me will give you
the reps you need to make singing well a regular, nourishing habit.

Warming Up Solves So Many Problems

  • Warming up teaches us to lovingly notice ourselves and treat our voice with care and compassion.
  • Warming up provides a space to solve the hardest vocal problems deliberately and effectively.
  • Warming up raises our baseline level of readiness for singing, and for life.
  • Warming up creates a lifelong habit of singing well, with clarity, ease and joy.

A lot of what goes wrong when we try to sing comes from our brain being in “speaking” mode, and things can’t help but sound and feel strained, pitchy or thin when we try to sing that way.

We need to make a deliberate effort to coax our body into singing if we want the voice to be free, easy, full and tuneful.

This means opening up our inside spaces,
getting the air moving, forgetting about words
and settling into the experience of letting sound move through you

This often looks like:

  • rolling our shoulders, loosening up the neck, standing up and unlocking our knees
  • making some easy, siren-y or whooping kinds of sounds
  • singing on “nonsense” syllables, like da-da-da or loo-lee-loo
  • massaging the jaw, stretching the tongue
The power in warming up, though, comes from noticing how it’s going, and making adjustments based on how we’re feeling right now.

Not how we usually feel, not how we think we “should” feel.
How we’re feeling right now.

In The Self-Sustaining Singer, I will teach you how to notice yourself so that your warm up starts to grow you as a singer

Warming up will no longer be something you “should” do, or mean to do.
It will be a regular, valued part of taking care of yourself, like a professional would.
Like professionals do.

Noticing ourselves is hard

We are the instrument we are trying to play. It’s hard to hear ourselves clearly.
And we have years of automatic habits that come from speaking and affect our attempts at singing, without us even noticing.

It takes a well-trained and experienced teacher to help us understand what exactly isn’t working and show us how to do it differently.

The good news is, we learned to speak by mimicking the adults around us.
Our brains are wired to learn by copying other people, through trial and error.

In The Self-Sustaining Singer, I describe the exercises you need and I demonstrate them for you.

Everyone is on mute for this part, singing in their own spaces, so that we can notice ourselves.
And then you get to show me how it’s going for you.
Unmute your microphone.
Show me what it’s like.
Ask questions.
Get coached.
Make changes, and feel and sound better, bit by bit.

Learning in a group gives you the camaraderie and emotional support to make the trial and error part fun.
We learn faster this way.
In The Self-Sustaining Singer, you’ll learn
  • my method for warming up consistently and confidently, with curiosity and self-compassion
  • how to troubleshoot the sounds that disappoint you
  • exercises to strengthen what needs to be strengthened and loosen what needs to loosen
  • how to practice in a way that supports your long-term growth
  • how to learn new music and build healthy habits at the same time

Over 12 weeks, you’ll be doing what the professionals do.
You’ll learn how to treat your voice like the priceless instrument that it is.
You get to keep these skills for life.

If you want to sing lower or higher notes with more ease,
if you want your voice to sound fuller and more resonant,
if you want to sing with less strain,
if you want to sing in better tune,

The Self-Sustaining Singer is where you need to be.

Get Ready With Me!

Tuesdays, March 12, 19, 26 and April 2

7:00 PM

on Zoom

Do you wish your singing wasn’t so “hit or miss”?
Do you want to speak more confidently?
Are you tired of sounding raspy, froggy, exhausted or squeaky?

Before you decide, “I just don’t have the knack for this,” ask yourself, have I warmed myself up properly?

Here’s the thing nobody tells you:

Everyone needs to warm up.
Even Beyoncé.
Even Sir Ian McKellen.
Even you.

I can show you how.

Maybe you’d like to…

  • sound amazing even at the beginning or the end of the day

  • make singing a regular part of your life just because it’s fun

  • feel more prepared and less vocally stressed when you’re giving presentations

  • get back into choir or community theater but you feel “rusty” and self-conscious about auditioning

The time to start is now!

When you Get Ready With Me you’ll…

  • learn how to warm up your voice for singing or speaking, without a piano

  • learn how to build a routine that strengthens your voice over time

  • work with your microphone on or off – your choice

  • get help for your specific issues

  • choose whether to perform for the group (2 mins or less), giving you the chance to manage all the butterflies and nervousness that come with the spotlight. This is great for audition prep!

Details

  • Our class meets on Tuesdays, March 12, 19, 26 and April 2, 2024 from 7-8 p.m. Pacific. I’ll send you the Zoom link after you register.

  • You’ll get the most out of the class if you attend live, and the classes will be recorded and available to re-watch through May 31, 2024.

  • Complete beginners to vocal technique, or public speaking, or both are completely welcome!

  • The tuition is a total bargain compared to studying with me privately. Plus, you get the benefit of a group learning environment. One of the best ways to learn how to improve your own voice is by listening to other people work on theirs.

  • If you find after the first session that this just isn’t for you, I’ll gladly refund $175.
