It’s a human reality: we need to make a deliberate effort to coax our body into singing if we want the voice to be free, easy, full and tuneful.
This often looks like:
- rolling our shoulders, loosening up the neck, standing up and unlocking our knees
- making some easy, siren-y or whooping kinds of sounds
- singing on “nonsense” syllables, like da-da-da or loo-lee-loo
- massaging the jaw, stretching the tongue.
You can see me do this here, after a month of not singing.
A little to my surprise, I was able to find something that sounded pretty much like “me” after about 15 minutes. Not my fullest self, but definitely serviceable.
One of the benefits of singing regularly, or at least warming up regularly, is that you raise your baseline level of readiness. The muscles get used to being used, and are increasingly willing to do what singing asks of them.
This is the goal of The Self-Sustaining Singer, to give you the skills and the routine to regularly warm yourself up so that you know how to start again if you have to take a break from singing for a while.
Vacations, heartbreak, illness – they happen to the best of us.
Your voice doesn’t have to stop growing when they do.
In The Self-Sustaining Singer, you’ll learn
- my method for warming up consistently and confidently, with curiosity and self-compassion
- how to troubleshoot the sounds that disappoint you
- exercises to strengthen what needs to be strengthened and loosen what needs to loosen
- how to practice in a way that supports your long-term growth
- how to learn new music and build healthy habits at the same time.
Over 12 weeks, you’ll be doing what the professionals do.
You’ll learn how to treat your voice like the priceless instrument that it is.
You get to keep these skills for life.
