This week a student asked, “what do I do when the conductor says we’re ‘flat’?”
Lucky for you, I recorded my answer!
Long story short, though, if someone says you’re “flat,” first ask yourself, do I know what the note is supposed to be? am I singing that note?
That’s the first thing to fix.
If you think you’re singing the right note, and the feedback is, “you’re flat”, then ask yourself:
- do I feel tall? long through my spine? broad across my back?
- can I feel my seat in my seat? my feet on the floor?
- am I directing the sound away from my body, or am I singing in a way that only I can hear?
Make those adjustments first.
If that doesn’t correct the problem, the issue may be the kind of vowel you are singing. If you’re curious about that, please check out the video – it’s much easier to explain with sound than pixels. This part starts at about minute 5:40.
Flat is fixable!
It’s a physics problem, not a personality defect.
Yours truly,
Michèle
