Notes On Notes

how to stop straining when you sing

June 26, 2026

I can show you how to use your voice with less strain typically within the first fifteen minutes of working with you.

The technique is not the hard part.

The hard part is making the technique a habit. Making the new way your new normal.

That takes trying it, and failing. And trying it, and failing, and so on, until your body learns what “easier” feels like, and your brain builds some new neural pathways to help you find “easy,” consistently.

My 12-week group class will help you through this process of trying and failing so that you can make healthy vocal technique a habit, for life.

In our first session, you will experience two ways of making the same sound – straining, and not straining. You will feel almost immediately how singing can be easier.

You won’t be sure how you did it, and the technique might not yet be repeatable, but you’ll know what the new way feels like.

In the first month, you will learn how to create this ease more consistently. Not on every note, but on some notes, and probably not on every vowel, but on some vowels. The brain and body learn healthy technique one step at a time.

You will learn which noises work for you to warm up with, and you’ll start practicing on your own during the week. Plan to set aside 10-15 minutes on three or four days during the week to practice. That’s it. About an hour of focused practice, spread over several days, will help you form a new vocal habit.

In the first two months, you’ll identify patterns and songs that work for you to warm up on. You’ll know how to apply my technique to pieces you want to learn. You’ll keep honing your practice routine, figuring out what works best for you.

You’ll notice how other students are dealing with the same issues you are. How “strained” then “not-strained” sounds through someone else’s body. You’ll feel how much your ears have grown.

By the end of 12 weeks,

  • you’ll have expanded the range of what’s comfortable for you – high/low, soft/loud, long/short
  • you’ll know how to warm yourself up and how to stretch yourself safely
  • you’ll know how to practice to support your long-term growth
  • when “strained” happens, you’ll have ideas about how to correct it, and the confidence to try
  • you’ll know how to learn new music and build healthy habits at the same time

Best of all, you’ll know how to find your free and easy voice again, even on those days when it feels like the universe is against you.

If this sounds like the kind of help you’re needing, send me an email at michele@mvmusik.com with GROUP in the subject line and I’ll put you on the waiting list.
