Last week, I wrote about one thing you can do to actually make progress with your voice.
And even though it’s just one thing, you might be feeling too impatient with yourself to give it a try.
If that’s you – and believe me, you’re not alone! – recording yourself can quicken your progress. A voice recorder or video camera can capture several things for you while you focus on changing just one.
Here’s what to do:
- Decide the one thing you’re going to focus on while you’re singing a phrase. For example, keeping your body feeling wide and open OR feeling your feet on the floor OR …
- Record yourself while you’re focusing on that one thing.
- Listen to/watch the replay and notice what you notice about that one thing.
- Listen to/watch again and notice what you notice about anything else.
- Repeat as desired.
A word of caution:
Hearing or seeing yourself recorded can feel brutal. It’s not for everybody. There’s nothing wrong with you if it’s not for you. Your gut probably knows right now if this is a good idea. Trust it.
You can make good progress with your singing even if you never listen to a recording of yourself doing it. That’s how it’s been for me. Back in the day I recorded nine (count ’em) years of voice lessons onto cassette tapes, listened back maybe three times, and eventually threw them all out.
I still made progress with my singing.
And then, many years later, I decided to release a couple of EPs with a couple of friends and was forced in that process to listen to my recorded voice. It was painful! But now I’m over it. If my teacher asks me to try something, and I’m not sure I’m getting it, I press record and listen back. It always moves me along.
So, if you’re feeling stuck, maybe try recording yourself.
And if you’d like to learn more about how your instrument works, come to my free workshop, live on Zoom!
Tuesday, August 25th at 1 p.m.
There will be plenty of time for Q & A. And there will be a recording, but please come live so I can help you in real time.
I’d love to see you!
Warmly,
Michèle
